During a visit to my school library in 2017, the librarian put Mike Rohde's The Sketchnote Handbook: The Illustrated Guide TO Visual Note-taking in my hands. From that day, I was hooked. Taking notes visually is really a thing! AND, as it turns out, research tells us it's also awesome for learning and engaging our brains. I've been challenging myself to find opportunities to create visual notes for all sorts of things. It seems my journey has only just begun.
Teaching & Learning
Media Week Project
In February of 2019, I had the opportunity to facilitate a group of Year 5 students on a 5-day sketchnote learning journey. Through the lens of the transdisciplinary theme How We Express Ourselves, our Media Week provided students the opportunity to delve deeply into a choice of media: sketchnotes, videography, photography, podcasting graphic design and animation.
With the 5-day collapsed timetable, a group of 18 students, an open-minded colleague and I, dug into basic drawing techniques, thinking and synthesizing words as visuals in the moment as well as creating planned sketchnotes from TedED videos. It was a fantastic learning week for all. The following are examples of the planned sketchnotes students produced.
